On-Line Ordering

Ok, I know the whole "no on-line ordering" business has everyone annoyed. I also know, from feedback, that hosting the images at Pbase has been confusing (no, I do NOT have links to nude beach pictures on my site!).

Just hang on a bit. Just a bit. I'm working on version 6 of the site, and I'll be bringing on-line ordering and a shopping cart back to the party. No more meet Phil on a street corner to exchange money for pictures - we'll be back to order on-line and have them appear in the mail a few days later.

This is competing with remodeling the bathroom, so my attention is divided. Patience, patience! It's just around the corner!

Sallies vs. Interburo Football

The gallery for last night's football game is up. Sallies was leading 27-0 at the half, but the final score was 27-21. You can figure out how the second half went.... The images aren't bad, though.

Padua Volleyball

Oh yeah! The volleyball pics came out very well. I'm looking forward to tonight's Padua vs. Ursuline game!

Architecture Appreciation

You want one measure of today's architecture appreciation? The number of homes being built by the likes of the Toll Brothers is going up, up, up. Which is a pretty good indication that any meaningful architecture appreciation is going down, down, down.

The Gutter

Yeah. What The Gutter said. :-) -prm

DMA lied to me....

I was supposed to shoot the Newark vs. DMA soccer game today. I called DMA at 0900 and asked about the game, and they told me the web site would be updated around 1400 if the game was cancelled. I checked at 1420, and there was no mention of it, so I drove all the way down to Banning to shoot in the rain, only to find - no game. I'm impressed, DMA. :-|

Mythbusters part II

According to sparse historical writings, the Greek mathematician Archimedes torched a fleet of invading Roman ships by reflecting the sun's powerful rays with a mirrored device made of glass or bronze

Teams Test Archimedes' Death Ray Device - New York Times

Oooooh, now I have to say, I *like* Mythbusters. This team's effort, though, looks extremely interesting.....

Paul Cayard's Sailing Web Site

Welcome to Cayard Sailing

Paul is the skipper of the Black Pearl, an oceangoing racing vessel sponsored by Disney to promote their sequel to Pirates of the Carribean. They are competing in the Volvo 2005-2006 around the world sailboat race - gruelling, wet, uncomfortable, fast, and dangerous. Follow along on this site....

Agent-based analysis of unstable economic markets

When examined out of equilibrium, economic patterns sometimes simplify into a simple, homogeneous equilibrium of standard economics; but just as often they show perpetually novel and complex behavior.

Out-of-Equilibrium Economics and Agent-Based Modeling

Another working paper from the brilliant Brian Arthur at the Santa Fe Institute. Read it if you're up for the math.

Seaun O'Boyle's Photography of Abandonment

Modern ruins exist in the fringe landscapes of our cities, places that were once hardwired to the center of the social and industrial infrastructure, now they have become faded shadows hidden behind cyclone fences on the outskirts, along old canals and abandon rail lines.

Modern Ruins Photographic Essays - Shaun O'Boyle

This site has a series of photoessays on abandoned land, buildings, and objects. His images are haunting, melancholy, and quite beautiful. Shaun has a good eye, and a fascination with these abandoned things. I highly recommend a visit to his site.

Industrial Espionage

A former employee of a Corning Inc. glassmaking plant is charged with stealing trade secrets and selling them to a Taiwanese company.

Man Accused of Stealing Corning Secrets - New York Times

Yep. About that "we trust our people" corporate culture....

Sailing lesson

A 20-year-old man who disappeared with his father on a sailboat trip was found alive in the vessel five days later and 130 miles from shore, but the search for the father was called off.

N.H. Man Found Alive on Sailboat - New York Times

The lessons from this article are 1) make sure your crew knows how to handle "man overboard" and practice it, 2) inspect your boat before you leave, and 3) wear your PFD when sailing with inexperienced crew. A tragedy....

Geocaching Sunset

It was an exceptionally nice evening....

I can't resist!

Avian Flu in the UK

Uh oh. The BBC is carrying an article about a parrot that died of Avian Flu in the UK. The bird was in quarantine, but it illustrates the danger.

Purdue Researcher's New Climate Model

Researchers at Purdue have produced a new climate model that has interesting things to say about the next 100 years. I'm not sure if my understanding of Complexity Theory allows me to believe the feasibility of running these models, but it's certainly interesting.

I want one...

Gotta love it! A bulletproof jean jacket!

Woohoo! Flock is here!

Awesome! I have the developer's release of Flock! This is going to be great fun....

Ugh! Misty, rainy, blowing, cold, nasty, bad-for-cameras day at the cross country meet! The visuals weren't bad, though. Here's one of the Padua runners about .3 miles from the finish. See the rest at the

So Where's The Flock?

Aarrrrrgh! I'm waiting and waiting and waiting....

There's a new browser about to hit the Net, called Flock. It's supposed to be out real soon now. I'm growing impatient! The cool thing about this as opposed to Firefox, which is what I use right now, is that Flock is designed from the ground up to be a social browser, which means it's tightly integrated with services I already use - like Blogger, del.icio.us, and Flickr. This should be highly cool....

How Not To Do Retail

Wow. I was shopping last night at the 'ol mall (that would be Christiana Mall), and our first stop was Strawbridge's. Um, really not impressed here. When I was up wandering around Manhattan with some friends a couple of months ago, we stopped at a shop - I don't even remember which one - and we were approached by two (!) clerks asking if they could help us find something. At Strawbridge's, though, my wife and I spent between five and ten minutes walking around looking for a clerk. They have "Price Check" locations, and clerks on the floor to help find things, but God forbid you want to actually buy something! Then you have to find a "Service Center" that's a) manned, b) manned by somebody who can help you, and c) in the department where you collected your stuff.

You know what? Skip it. Just buy stuff on the Internet. Here's a good place to start - American Apparel.

ADHD

You know all you people who get frustrated with me? Read this. It's an article on dealing with Adult ADHD.

1918 flu pandemic related to H5N1 bird flu

An article in today's New York Times reports that the flu virus that caused the 1918 pandemic that killed 50 million people was a bird flu, related to the current outbreak of H5N1 bird flu, that jumped directly to humans. There is reason to be concerned about a global pandemic of H5N1.

Social Bookmarks

I've converted my bookmark list to use del.icio.us, which is a social bookmarking site. You add an applet to your browser, and you can always view or add to your bookmark list easily. It also allows you to maintain your bookmarks on multiple systems, or share them with others. To see my current bookmark list, for example, you click on the magic URL http://del.icio.us/pmoyer.

Follow my Geocaching!

You can now track my geocaching activities through my personal travel bug (Phil's Phriend). The TB tracking ID (click it for the tracking page) is TBK07N . That's a zero in there, btw.

Haven't updated lately!

There are a bunch of new Band, Football, and Soccer pictures up in the Galleries.
